Back in the apartment later that afternoon, Laurent glanced into the master bedroom. Jan was already sleeping soundly. He’d received an injection of antibiotics to jumpstart clearing up the infection, a prescription for a continuing course of them plus some painkillers and a professional bandaging job. Then Laurent had taken him to one of their neighbourhood cafés and tempted Jan with all of his favourite dishes until he’d protested he was full.

With one last look at the still form huddled under the blankets, he swung the door mostly closed then headed back into the living room, dialling Claude as he went.

“Laurent. At the airport?”

Laurent sighed as he sat down. “No, actually. I’ll need to take the first flight over tomorrow. I didn’t want to leave Jan just yet. Can you rebook the airline and let the hotel know?”

“Certainly.” Though Claude didn’t ask, the question was there in his voice.

It was precisely because he didn’t pry that Laurent found himself telling Claude all of the details about what he’d found and all that had happened since he’d got home earlier. When he’d finished, he waited uneasily for Claude’s response.

“It sounds like you did the right thing.”

Laurent gusted out an unexpected sigh of relief, even as he wondered why Claude’s approval meant so much to him. “Thanks. I hope so. It was just hard to walk away from him while he’s this…fragile.”

“I wonder if he’s been to work? I suppose not,” Claude mused. “I will call and let them know that he’s been ill, perhaps smooth the way a bit. Last thing he needs is to lose his position as well. And I’ll stop by and check on him tomorrow when I come for the bags.”

Laurent smiled. “You’re a good man, Claude. But there’s no need to come by anymore. I think now that things seem less uncertain here, I’m going to wait and pack when I return from London. I’ll still go to Pascal’s for a time, but I’ll drive there and just take my couple of bags with me.”

Claude hummed. “I still think I’ll stop over to see how Jan is doing. It sounds like he could use someone to bolster him up and give him a bit of a push. And it shouldn’t have to be you in that position anymore.”

Frowning, Laurent protested, “Well, I can’t see that it should be you either. I thought you didn’t even really like Jan.”

“He’s just young and learning a life lesson at the moment. I don’t dislike him at all. He’s a sharp young man with a lot of promise. I just never thought you two were at mutual stages of your life where the commitment would work in the long run.”

Laurent sat back, floored by Claude’s admission. “I had no idea.”

“It wasn’t my place to say. And I took no pleasure in seeing him with that man and being proven correct. It sounds like he made bad decisions all around and is paying for them now. Poor thing. I have no problem with giving him a bit of impartial support.
